How is sustainability even possible?

As a 1 of 1 clothing designer, my goal is to create, and up-cycle unique pieces from second hand sourced fabrics. I believe as an artist, designer, and human being that it is my job to be mindful of the amount of waste that my materials contribute to pollution. From the research I’ve done on sustainability in the fashion industry I am clear on knowing that it is impossible for a clothing brand to be 100% sustainable. The reality of sustainable fashion is that most of the damage has already been done, between the mass production of synthetic fabrics already in existence, and the rate of it’s continuance it’s our responsibility on this Earth to be mindful of our purchasing power. Some brands are mass producing at such a high rate that it is absolutely unnecessary, with the amount of clothing that ends up in thrifts stores, and consignment shops a lot of those pieces will eventually be in landfills if not bought and or recycled. My intentions are to create, and up-cycle secondhand fabrics to give them another life. I imagine that because of the intricateness of the designs, the time, & creativity put into the garments that they will not be disposed of, and will be able to live many lifetimes. I cannot promise 100% sustainability because it is actually impossible. I can promise that my the majority of my fabrics are & will continue to be sourced secondhand by me personally for the longevity of my career, and mass production is not in my plans.

Love,

Mariah
